Toad, Surrounded

By the river, the cattails reflect
the strong city, lights,

your patchwork hand lingers above the eddy,
thirsty,
watching the currents sweep debris away.

The toad rests, stunned in the grass;
we crouch near it, breathing with it,
afraid our shadows might make it disappear.
